The Dunlap Reporter dated January 6, 1916:

John Oestmann was born February 22, 1831 in Hanover, Germany. In 1858 he was united in marriage to Maria Heuerhusen and in 1882 Mr. Ostmann and his family sailed for America settling near Charter Oak. Mrs. Ostmann died in 1901 and for a number of years the husband made his home with his children in the west returning each winter to spend that season with his daughter, Mrs. Pete Weber, at which home he passed away Wednesday morning, just as he was arising for the day, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 7 days. Mr. Ostmann never knew a sick day and passed away very quickly. He leaves to mourn his departure six children as follows: Mrs. Davis Paulsen, Oceana, Cal, Mrs. Sophie Weber, Dunlap, Mrs. Margaret Schroeder, San Diego, Cal., Henry Ostmann, Cal., Mrs. Anna Kremin, Kiesling, Idaho and Catherine Peterson (sic) of Spokane, Wash., also forty-five grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from the home of Mrs. Weber near Dunlap last Friday, Rev. Wendt officiating. Appropriate music was rendered by the Rannells Bros. quartette. Interment was made at Charter Oak.
