Glen Lyman Cary was born April 28, 1926, the son of Leslie and Hazel Cooper Cary. He died Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa at the age of eighty.

Glen was born in Neligh, Nebraska. He received his education in the Ewing Community School, graduating from the Ewing High School with the class of 1943. He moved to Maurice, Iowa and entered the United States Army in 1945, serving in Occupied Japan after the war. Glen received his honorable discharge in 1947 and made his home in LeMars. On April 28, 1951, Glen was united in marriage to Mary O'Neill at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

He attended Morningside College, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor's Degree in business. In 1963 he attended Wayne State, receiving a teaching certificate. After completing his education he taught in Homer, Nebraska and later in Dow City. Glen also farmed off and on during his life. In 1980, he retired from teaching and was the Crawford County Field Assessor from 1981 to 1996. Glen and Mary moved to Nevada, Iowa in 2003.

He was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time playing cards and checkers with his grandchildren. Glen's greatest accomplishments were his wife, children and grandchildren. Even though he was eighty, he called himself a double forty. He was a very hard worker, very handy at accomplishing anything. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Maggie and one brother, Elmer. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Nevada; two sons, Richard Cary and his wife, Diane of Forrest Lake, Minnesota; Casey Cary and his wife, Heather of Dow City; three daughters, Jeanie Gibson and her husband, Jerry of Gilbert, Iowa; Cindy Anderson and her husband, Joe; Lisa Hovar and her husband, Matt, all of Nevada; sixteen grandchildren; one brother, Dale Cary and his wife, Arlene of Lorrain, Ohio; two sisters, Leola Heese and her husband, Lloyd of Laurel, Nebraska; and Nila Schrunk and her husband, Merlyn of Ewing, Nebraska; three sisters-in-laws, Peggy Demke of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Betty Tighe and her husband, Bob of Monticello, Iowa; Carol Livermore and her husband, Jim of Davenport, Iowa; and two brothers-in-law, Daniel O'Neill and his wife, Mona of Jackson, Nebraska and Sherlock O'Neill and his wife, Sue of DeWitt, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Dow City, Iowa. Fr. Donald Slaven served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at the Dow City Cemetery. EveVonne Muff provided the service music. Other participants of the Mass were: Lector, Heather Cory; Eucharistic Ministers were: Jim & Carol Livermore. Gift bearers were: Erin Cary, McKinlee Gibson and Maggie Gibson. Honorary pallbearers were: Nathaniel Anderson, Elizabeth Cary, Lillian Hovar, Patrick Cary, Tayler Cary, Lucy Hovar, Kevin Cary and Max Hovar. Pallbearers were: Joe Anderson, Anthony Cary, Larry Heese, Jerry Gibson, Billy O'Neill, Sean Gibson, Matt Cary and Matt Hovar. Military Honors was the Dow City American Legion Post 444. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4:30 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2006, with a Scriptural Prayer Service held at 7:00 p.m. At the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Dow City Community Building, served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
