Ernest Stachour

Ernest E. Stachour, 92, of Clinton and formerly of Sibley, died Tuesday at Bickford Cottage, Clinton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at United Methodist Church, Sibley, with the Rev. Richard Layman officiating. Burial will follow at the Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley. Visitation was Friday at the Walton-Roste Funeral Home, Sibley. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home handled local arrangements.

He was born March 17, 1913, in Holland, Iowa, to Claus D. and Elizabeth Harberts Stachour. He married Vera Trusty on Sept. 1, 1931, in Canton, S.D. She died in 1994.

He was raised in Grundy Center and Rutland, S.D., before moving to Sibley in 1927.

He graduated from Sibley High School in 1930.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He began working as a U.S. Postal Mail Carrier before entering the Army. He retired in 1972 after serving 20 years as a city carrier and 22 years as a rural carrier. He and his wife owned and operated the “Drive Inn” restaurant for eight years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Sibley. He also was active in various civic groups such as Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two children, Judith (William) Braucht of Madison, Wis., and Florida and James (Phyllis) Stachour of Clinton; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Elsie) Stachour of Sibley; and one sister, Gertrude Swalve of Winnebago, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, two brothers and one sister.
