Richard “Digger” Williams

MORRISON, Ill. — Richard “Digger” Williams, 81, of Morrison, died Saturday at his home.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls, Ill., with the Rev. Donald Matthiessen, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Sterling, Ill., to Harry and Kathryn Hermes Williams. He married LaVonne Mennenga Mount on March 6, 1976, in Morrison.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army.

He was the Grove Hill Cemetery superintendent before retiring in 1982 after 34 years of service.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ronald (Norma) Williams of Savanna, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Vonda Miller of Sterling; two stepsons, Gene Mount of Rock Falls, Ill., and Larry Mount of Branson, Mo.; three brothers, Robert (Marilyn) Williams of Fulton, Ill., Harvey (Pauline) Williams of Morrison and Harry (Linda) Williams Jr. of Los Alamos, N.M.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to cancer research.

He was preceded in death by five sisters and his parents.
