Harold J. Ryder

Harold J. Ryder, 102, died Friday at his home.

Funeral services will be at the Pape Funeral Home Tuesday at 10:00 A.M, with the Rev. Phillip Sneller officiating and burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.

A Masonic Funeral Service by Emulation Masonic Lodge #255 will be conducted at 3:30p.m. Monday, with visitation following from 4 to 8p.m., at the Pape Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Mark Ryder, Brent Ryder, Ronald Reid, Tim Reid, Casey Simpson and Barb Carstensen.

Honorary pallbearers are: Marty Fatchett, Virginia Scribner, Tim Meyer, Harold Johnson, Bill Zirkelbach, Paul and Brian Ryder.

He was born September 7, 1903 in Clinton, lowa, to Edmund S. and Rosa Smith Duley Ryder, the fourth of five children. He was raised on the Ryder homestead on the Elvira Road. This was the home of the Highland Fruit Farm owned and operated by his grandfather and sons in the 1800’s.

He married Florence L. Crampton on November 11, 1924. They had one son, Julian. She died in 1974.

Harold was a clerk for Towles and Hypes store from 1924 to 1928, working in the shoe department.

From 1928 to 1966 he was employed by Clinton Corn Processing Company as an office accountant and supervisor of the store rooms. He retired after serving the company for thirty-eight years.

During World War II, Harold and Florence invited many soldiers who were patients at the Schick General Hospital in Clinton, for dinners and entertainment.

Upon his retirement he and Florence would travel east to visit relatives. Most of their time was spent in northwestern Wisconsin fishing and visiting friends.

Following his wife’s death he would join friends on trips to Las Vegas. He enjoyed the local river boat when he was not fishing.

Harold greatly enjoyed gardening, fishing, viewing wildlife and meeting old friends at Doyle’s.

Harold was a self-taught musician. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, guitar, accordian and keyboard.

He was a fifty-three year member of Emulation Masonic Lodge #255 and a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the oldest member of the local Aerie of Eagles Club #705.

He is survived by daughter-in-law Shirley Ryder of New London, Iowa; grandsons Mark (Janet) Ryder of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Brent Ryder of Clinton; granddaughter Debbie (Ron) Reid of New London, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Melanie Simpson, Tim Reid, Michelle Meyer, and three great, great grandchildren: Josette, Joseph and Jacob Simpson and as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Genesis Visiting Nursing Association.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife and son, Julian in 1982.
