The Clinton Herald Saturday March 1, 1958 p. 9 Henry Stewart Towle, 86, Clinton pioneer resident and printer, and for 40 years an associate in the department store business here, died at 9:05 a.m. today in Jane Lamb hospital following an attack of pneumonia. The body is in the Bragonier-Fay funeral home where friends may call after 5 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Bragonier-Fay funeral chapel with Dr. Bruce McCoullough, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Rose Croix services will also be held in the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Henry Stewart Towle was born in Clinton April 13, 1871, the eldest son of Phineas Stewart and Mary B. Towle, pioneer resident of Clinton. He received his education in the Clinton public schools, the Clinton Business college and the Northwestern Military academy, Highland Park, Ill., which is now located at Geneva Lake, Wis. As a youth he learned the printer's trade and worked as a compositor in the office of The Clinton Herald, afterwards becoming assistant city editor or of the Clinton Morning Age, and returned to The Herald as assistant editor and later was associated with the Advertiser, published at that time as a tri-weekly, in the old town of Lyons. In 1894 he became associated with the department store of Towle & Spreter Comany, and for nearly 40 years was a member of that firm under its various names of Towle & Spreter Co., Towle & Meyer Co. and Towle & Hypes Co., most of which time he spent as secretary and treasurer of the company. He was a 50-year member of both the York and Scottish Rite Masonic bodies and had served for a period of 25 years as treasurer of Emulation Lodge 255, and for a like period as treasurer of Keystone Chapter 32 R.A.M. He was also a past commander of Holy Cross Commandery 10 K.T., and was a K.C.C.H. member of DeMolay Consistory. He was also a life member of the musicians' union, Local 79 A.F.M., and was one of the original incorporators of the Associated Credit Bureau which is now the Credit Bureau of Clinton, and was a former director of the City National bank. In June 1897, he was married to Anna Sheppart. She died in July of 1952. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister Mariana, in infancy, and by two brothers. Surviving are one brother, Stewart W. Towle, Clearwater, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. Springdale sec 39 lot 116 Buried: Springdale cemetery
