Msgr. Ambrose Burke, 102 10/09/1998 CLINTON, Iowa -- Services for Msgr. Ambrose J. Burke, of Clinton, will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Christ the King Chapel on the St. Ambrose University campus, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Prince of Parish St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, Clinton, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Additional visitation is 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Christ the King Chapel, Davenport. Msgr. Burke died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at The Alverno, Clinton. Delaney -Vulich Funeral Home, Clinton, is in charge of arrangements. He was born Nov. 27, 1895, in Sigourney. He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy and College, then attended the Catholic University Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1921 in Baltimore. He received his masters and Ph.D. from Yale University. For a number of years, he was a professor of English and head of the department at St. Ambrose. In 1941, he was appointed president of the college, a position he held for 16 years. During his presidency, he was responsible for the building of the library and Christ the King Chapel at the college. Msgr. Burke was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in 1956. He served for 17 years, then began a 16-year service as chaplain at Mercy Hospital, Clinton. He retired in 1986. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
