MONMOUTH, Iowa — Wanda M. Mattix, 78, of Monmouth, died Tuesday Oct. 25, 2005, at the Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa.

There will be a celebration of her life at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Ruth Ann Scott officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oakview Cemetery, Welton.

She was born March 11, 1927, in Maquoketa to Pearly Joseph and Maude M. Potter Knight. She married Charles Gertds, then Franklin H. Shirley, Leslie E. Mattix and Dale V. Clark. They all preceded her in death.

She was a 1944 graduate of Welton High School and attended Clinton Community College for one year.

She worked at various jobs. She owned and operated a taxi cab in Maquoketa at one time; worked as a nurse’s assistant at the Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa; and was a waitress and cook at the Green Mill Café, Maquoketa. She was a custodian with Mid Park Central School, Welton, and was a cook at the Maquoketa Care Center.

She was a City Council member and city clerk in Welton. She also served on the City Council in Monmouth and was a Monmouth City Council news reporter with the Maquoketa Sentinel-Press. She also volunteered at the Jackson County Historical Society.

Survivors include her children, Estelle Harper of Maquoketa, Frank (Celia) Shirley of Princeton, Fla., Janelle Shirley of Abilene, Kan., Les Mattix and Erin (April) Mattix of Monmouth; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Wanda M. Mattix Memorial Fund has been established.
