Helen L. Speer, 84, of Mount Carroll, died Friday October 7, 2005 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, Mount Carroll. The Rev. Mark Harkness of the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll.

She was born July 24, 1921, in rural Mount Carroll, to Howard and Ethel Sisler Pauley. She married Wayne E. Speer on April 25, 1942, in Mount Carroll.

She was a receptionist for Dr. C.G. Piper in Mount Carroll for many years.

She was instrumental in the building of the Mount Carroll Swimming Pool through the ”Sink or Swim“ store.

She was a member of the Mount Carroll United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Janet (David) Smith of Mount Carroll; a son, Gerald Speer of Elizabeth, Ill.; two grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Carlos Zillhart of Mount Carroll; and a brother Francis (Dorothy) Pauley of Loves Park, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, a grandson, a sister, a brother and a sister in-law.
