Paul E. Pfeffer, 62, a prominent Clinton Attorney and Community Activist, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Mercy North Medical Center in Clinton from a sudden heart attack. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Prince of Peace Parish-St. Irenaeus Church, Clinton. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Pape Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be held at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Lone Tree, Iowa. Pallbearers will be his cousins, Sam Young, Glen and Ross DauSchmidt, Dick, Paul, and John Kissick, and John and Dick Rausenberger. Honorary pallbearers will be students from the Camanche High School and Camanche Middle School Mock Trial Teams and members of the Clinton County Bar Association. Memorials may be given to the Clinton County Courthouse Historical Foundation, Prince of Peace College & Preparatory College, or the First United Methodist Church.
Paul was born on Oct. 14, 1942, in Fort Knox, K.Y., the son of Dr. L.L. and Pauline (Young) Pfeffer. He graduated from the Garrigan High School, Algona, Iowa, in 1960.
He received his bachelors degree in accounting from the University of Iowa in 1964 and his juris doctorate degree from the University of Iowa in 1967. Paul served as a clerk for the Iowa Supreme Court Justice T.G. Garfield. He married Edith Reiss on July 24, 1971, at the First United Methodist Church in Clinton. Paul and his wife moved to Clinton in 1970, where he practiced law at the Johnson-Oakley Law Firm. In 1974, he became partner with Johnson-Oakley-Pfeffer Law Firm. In 1975, he started his own practice, the Paul E. Pfeffer Law Office, which in 1980, moved to 511 S. 3rd St. in Clinton until the present.
Paul served as President of the Skyline Center. He incorporated and was one of the founders of the Clinton A.R.C.H. He served as chairman of the Clinton County Republicans from 1975-1981. He founded the Clinton Downtown Business Association and was co-founder of the Clinton Substance Abuse Council. He was instrumental in founding the Clinton Landlord Association. He was a very successful Mock Trial Coach for the Camanche Schools for the past five years.
He was a member of the Clinton County Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, and the Clinton Rotary Club. He was a former member of the Clinton Kiwanis, Board of Trustees of First United Methodist Church, and Clinton Trees Forever.
Paul is survived by his wife, Edith, of Clinton; two daughters, Emily Pfeffer and Laura Pfeffer, of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, John (Joan) Pfeffer, of Ames, Iowa; two sisters, Judy Laing, of Roseville, Minn., and Mrs. Joann (Jerry) Ferstl, of Algona; and four nieces; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
