Death came suddenly late yesterday to Mrs. Ida A. Tufford, wife of Captain Wil V. Tufford of this city, at her home, 514 Sixth avenue. Her demise was due to blood poisoning, resulting from breaking of an absess in her ear.
Mrs. Tufford had not been feeling well the past few days, but was up and around as usual. She made a trip to Iowa City and back early in the week. The absess which had been bothering her the past few days suddenly broke internally yesterday and her death followed in a few hours.
Intelligence of her death was received with deep sorrow by many friends here. She had been a longtime resident of this city, and was loved and esteemed by all who knew her.
Mrs. Tufford was born in Fulton on October 28, 1864. She came to Clinton when a baby, and with the exception of a few years in Montana and Nebraska, she spent her life in Clinton. Her maiden name was Ida Simpson, and her marriage with Captain Tufford took place in 1893. Surviving are her husband and two sons, Dean Efner and Will I. Tufford.
Mrs. Tufford was prominent in lodge circles, particularly in the Rebekah Assembly. She was president of the state assembly in 1893 and 1894, and for many years had been identified with Star of Hope lodge No. 1? of this city. At the time of her death she held the office of instructor of the state assembly. Her commission for this office reached Clinton a few hours after her death. Mrs. Tufford was also identified with a number of other local organizations.
Funeral services will be held at the Sixth avenue home at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. F. H. Burrell, rector of St. John's church will officiate performing the Episcopal ceremony. Mrs. A. H. Hammarstrom will sing.
At Springdale cemetery, Star of Hope lodge will perform its ritualistic burial ceremony. A number of grand lodge officers of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs are expected to come to Clinton tonight and tomorrow to attend the funeral.
The remains of Mrs. Tufford will be laid to rest beside those of her mother and of her daughter, Ruth Tufford, who passed away a year ago last March.
