June 23, 1915 - The Clinton Advertiser

One of Clinton's earliest pioneers was lost to the city last evening when Mrs. Mary Knapp died at the home of her son, George Knapp on Woodlawn avenue. Mrs. Knapp, who was eighty-three years old, came to Clinton in 1837 and has lived here since.

Mrs. Knapp was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 29, 1832. Her maiden name was Sears. In 1837 she came to Clinton with her parents. In 1848 she married Jackson Knapp. Her husband died twenty-seven years ago. She is survived by one son, George and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Cone and Mrs. James Ramsey, Sr., both of Clinton.

A member of the Territorial Pioneers' association, she was one of the oldest members. She retained her faculties to the last and was active until a short time ago. Her memory was keen and her descendants and friends used to enjoy listening to her tales of the early days of Clinton and Iowa. Clinton was nothing more than a settlement of huts when she came and she has seen it grow into a modern city and has watched each forward step with keen interest.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the home of Geroge Knapp on Woodlawn avenue. Rev. Hess of the Christian church will officiate. Interment will be made in Springdale cemetery.
