Obituary
Evelyn Steward, 97, wrapped in her Savior’s arms, made the peaceful journey to her everlasting home on July 27, 2022, at Clarissia C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, where she was surrounded by her loving family.

Evelyn Mathilda Paarmann Steward was born July 13, 1925, to Harry Frederick and Amanda Caroline (Meggers) Paarmann on the farm in Clinton County. She was baptized into the Christian faith October 18, 1925, at Grace Lutheran Church where she was also confirmed on May 5, 1940.

Evelyn graduated from Grand Mound High School in 1942, and until her passing was the last surviving member of her graduating class of 16 students. She married Lester Steward November 25, 1945, and to this union five sons were born.

Evelyn was employed at Matthiessen’s Locker Plant for 10 years and as a custodian at Central Jr. High School for 10 years retiring in 1990. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, where she was active in bible studies, the ladies circle, and loved to help cook for vacation bible school camps.

She was an avid walker around her hometown of DeWitt, and when weather didn’t permit, her walks continued at the Hart Center where she also enjoyed daily water aerobics.

Evelyn lived for her family and attended all her sons’ grandchildrens’ and great-grandchildrens’ activities.

She became an avid wrestling fan, for which she received an award for being a faithful 50 + year wrestling attendee. Holidays were her special family times when everyone would come home.

Evelyn is survived by 4 sons, Dennis of Clinton, Ronnie (Donna) of DeWitt, Terry (Sandy) of Moline, Illinois, Rick (Brenda) of DeWitt; 18 grandchildren, Derek (Pam) Steward, Kurt (Kenna) Steward, Mike (Debbie) Steward, Mark Steward, Nikki (Kevin) Roling, Mike (Aundrea) Kennedy, Scott (Kristen) Kennedy, Tom Kennedy, Kerry (Chuck) Lashmit, Aaron (Abby) Steward, Jennifer (Steve) Akins, Shannon Cartee, Lisa Jones, Michelle Jones, Brian (Nicole) Steward, Brad (Cheyenne) Steward, Ashley (Joel) Smith, and Sarah (Joe) Nordine; 31 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; 3 special Godchildren, Leslie Paarmann, Irene Myers and Marcene Simonson; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Wilma (Einar) Simonson, brothers, Herb (Sadie) Paarmann, Ray (Dorothy) Paarmann, Earl (Marion) Paarmann, and Grace Paarmann, and her beloved son, Jeffrey Dean Steward.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2022, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, the Rev. Eric Obermann officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in her memory.
