Helen M. Sanger Bartels, 97, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, December 31, 2021, at her home.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, January 6, 2022, at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 A.M. at the church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Helen Marie Stender was born on October 15, 1924 in Grand Mound, Iowa, to Carl and Lena Marie (Siemsen) Stender. She was a 1943 graduate of Maquoketa High School. She married Howard Sanger on December 31, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1965. She later married Maynard Bartels on December 10, 1977 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 2012.

Helen was a homemaker and in earlier years had worked as a cashier for Jug'O'Milk and as a waitress at Hayes Café in Maquoketa. Upon her marriage to Maynard, they owned and operated Bartels Floor Covering in Maquoketa for many years where she had many roles but mainly as a bookkeeper. They later sold the business to the Breitbach family.

Helen was a member of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. She enjoyed dancing with Maynard and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Kenny Sanger of Maquoketa, IA, Donnie (Pam) Sanger of Marion, IA, Jim Sanger Sr. of Davenport, IA, Gary (Brenda) Sanger of Maquoketa, IA, and Dennis Sanger of Maquoketa, IA; 5 grandchildren, Shelley Sanger-Hoover, Darrin Sanger, Jamie Sanger, Lisa Sanger, and Kelley Sanger; and several great-grandchildren including Storm Hoover who visited her often and called her everyday. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard and husband Maynard, sisters Lois Brinkman and Betty Benhart, and brothers Melvin Stender and Bob Stender.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or to the family.
