George Edward Taylor was born in Boone, IA, the youngest of five, to Charles Edison Taylor Jr. and Ethel Shaeffer Taylor. While still in high school in Clinton, IA, George began working as an errand boy at the City National Bank where he worked his way from teller to trust officer. Eventually he served as president at two Iowa banks. At age 19, he met Ruby Darlene Hougham, a young beauty operator, on a train, and knew immediately that she was the one for him. In January of 1944 they were married in Gladbrook, IA. George went straight from the ceremony into the Army Air Corps, serving as a lieutenant and eventually was sent to Okinawa at the end of WW II. He was recalled to the Air Force in 1950 and served another short term in England and Germany.
George and Darlene settled in Clinton, IA, where they raised three children as he worked at City National Bank. During that time, they spent summer vacations at Big Pine Lake in northwest Minnesota, eventually purchasing a small cabin, where he spent summers well into his 90s. For more than 60 years, George honed and passed on his notable fishing skills to many friends and family members. George's banking career took him to Boone, IA in 1972 and to Marshalltown, IA in 1978. In 1989 he retired from banking and remained in his much-loved community of Marshalltown.
George's life was marked by service to his church and community. He continuously looked for ways to help others. Through his banking, he loved to support individuals launching businesses. He served his community through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Boy Scouts, and through charitable projects at his church. When he saw a need, George sought to meet it. He was a founding member of the Big Pine Lake Association and participated in improving the quality of his beloved Big Pine.
George will be remembered by all who knew him for his honesty, integrity and sense of commitment. He loved hunting pheasants with his well-loved hunting dogs, training his last dog at the age of 80. He "jogged" well into his 80s, staying active his entire life. Through the natural decline of his last several years, he was a trooper, rolling with the punches, remaining positive and helpful in any way he could. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a role model to us all.
In passing, George was reunited with: Darlene, his wife of 62 years; Cheryl Taylor his daughter-in-law; Ella Bisbee, his great granddaughter; Charles and Ethel Taylor, his parents, and his three brothers and one sister.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children Susan Bisbee (George), David Taylor, and Nancy Lindroth (Rick); grandchildren Andrew Bisbee, Nate Bisbee (Carrie), Keith Bisbee, Leslie Jordan (Tom), Alison Berry (Zach), Leigh Calandruccio (Rocco), Laura Finer (Shawn), Kristen Kludt (Dave), Nicole Dunham (Seth); great-grandchildren Molly Bisbee, Hannah Bisbee, Cate Bisbee, Charlie Bisbee, Hudson Jordan, Juliet Jordan, Luke Jordan, Benjamin Berry, Abigail Berry, Ava Calandruccio, Rocco Calandruccio, Reid Finer, Emmy Finer, Everett Kludt, Asher Kludt and Eden Dunham.
