Fred Thiede Jr., 85, of DeWitt, died Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus in Davenport, as the result of an automobile accident.

Frederick André Thiede Jr. was born August 11, 1935, to Frederick August and Amelia (Jacobsen) Thiede in rural Welton, Iowa. After graduating from DeWitt High School in 1953, he attended the University of Iowa on a track scholarship, studying engineering and serving in the R.O.T.C. He later served 6 years in the National Guard. Fred married Shirley Carraher on August 31, 1958, at Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt. The couple resided in rural DeWitt. Fred worked for Oscar Mayer in the engineering planning department until he started farming with his father in 1961, buying his first cow herd in 1962. He raised and sold purebred Simmental cattle until 1995 and maintained a herd of his own until recently. While farming, Fred also sold seed corn, worked for the FSA office, and was the maintenance supervisor for the Clinton County Recycle Center. Shirley preceded him in death in 2005.

Fred served as president of the DeWitt J.C.s where he made many lifelong friends. He was also the Beef Superintendent for the Clinton County Fair, and served on the Clinton County Zoning Board until the present. He enjoyed farming, calving season, and cattle sales, tractor shows and old time threshers, and collecting the toy tractors of models he owned. He loved special events and social time with neighbors and friends, especially his kids and grandkids. In his later years, Fred enjoyed spending time and traveling with his partner, Karen Wendel, visiting family and new places.

He is survived by his children, Lori (Jim) Michaelsen of Camanche, Fred (Jennifer) Thiede of DeWitt, and LuAnn “Lu” Thiede of DeWitt; grandchildren, Nathan (Katey) Kooi, Kelly (Kevin Archer) Michaelsen, Ashley (Brian) Leibold, and Curtis (Erika) Thiede; great-grandchildren, Noella, Kinley, Tyler, Ashton, Blake, and Liam; nieces and nephews; his partner, Karen Wendel; his beloved dog, Bailey, and cat, Annie.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert (Mary Jean) Thiede, and nephew, Robert Mark Thiede.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2021, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation Iowa Chapter, or Clinton County Fair.
