Kevin Claeys, 65, of Welton, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, February 18, 2021, in his home.

Kevin Michael Claeys was born April 6, 1955, in DeWitt, Iowa, to Francis and Shirley (Cleveland) Claeys. He was a 1973 graduate of Central Community Schools in DeWitt. Kevin married Jo Ellen Wirth on December 23, 1978, at the United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. The couple resided in Welton. He worked for Larry and Carol Ann Roeder farming, later opening C & L Insulation and Siding with them. He then worked for C & J Farm Service for 13 years. In 1996, he opened Claeys Repair and continued farming.

Kevin enjoyed family, golfing, fantasy football, and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts & L.A. Dodgers. Kevin served as a City of Welton Council Member and as Mayor. He was a member of the Welton Lion’s Club and volunteered as a coach for the Welton baseball and softball teams. Kevin served on the Central Community School Board for one term. He also donated his time and talents to various organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jo; a daughter, Malinda (Lion) Claeys of Pueblo West, Colorado; his mother, Shirley Claeys; siblings, Curtis (Diane) Claeys, Denise (Pat) Feldpausch, Todd Claeys, Marlaina (Jim) Recknagel, Colette (Chad) Christensen, Corrin (Geoff) Blandin, and John “Jay” (Leora) Claeys; many nieces and nephews; and his fur baby, Sully.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2021, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Burial will follow at Oakview Cemetery in Welton.
