Dennis Robert Pingel was born on December 19, 1939 in Clinton County, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Edith (Wittrock) Pingel. The middle child of three boys, he grew up on a 160 acre farm just southeast of Lost Nation. He often reminisced about his time growing up on the farm. One fond memory was of him and his brothers cutting the top off a Ford Model A, and hunting rabits through the field.
Upon graduation in 1958, from Lost Nation High School, he became a truck driver and moved to the Clinton area. In 1969 Dennis took a position as a truck driver and operator for Foley Construction, retiring in 2000 after 31 years. Dennis was married and divorced twice, and had four children. He moved to Camanche in 1976, where he remained until his death.
Dennis enjoyed socializing with friends, and is fondly remembered for being a jokester. He enjoyed playing Euchre, was a member of the Coachman (Camping) Club for years, and had a unique talent for woodworking. In his free time he was often found on his motorcycle, tinkering in his shop, or at the truck stop or cafe drinking coffee with the locals. Despite complications from his COPD, Dennis rarely missed an opportunity to have a coffee and lunch at Spring Garden to visit with the staff and patrons.
Dennis is survived by his children: Rhonda Smith of Low Moor, Iowa, Dean (Michelle) Pingel of Clinton, Iowa, Justin (Ginger) Pingel of Grand Mound, Iowa, and Jared (Holly) Pingel of Valparaiso, Indiana; five grandchildren: Addison, Cooper, Steven, Brent, and Matt; two great grandhchildren, and brothers: Arthur Pingel, Jr. of Wheatland, Iowa, and Kenneth (Nancy) Pingel of Bettendorf, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father: Arthur Pingel and his mother: Edith Luckow.
Memorials can be made to the COPDFoundation.org . COPD is a progressive disease; a direct result of smoking. Quit smoking for you and your family. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or visit www.smokefree.gov.
