Joseph L. Torpey, aka, "Larry" passed peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas on June 18, 2020. He was formerly of DeWitt, Iowa and was born in Clinton, Iowa to Joseph Lionel Torpey and Helen Anderson Torpey Waggoner. He is survived by JoAnn Bartosch his wife of 57 years, daughter Heidi Torpey and son-in-law Brendan Condon of New York and son Jay Torpey and wife Trish Ford of Austin, Texas. He was blessed with four grandchildren: Kelly, Adare, Dracy, and Townes. Larry is also survived by his sister Margo Kirkpatrick and her husband Larry of McDade, Texas and their children and grandchildren.
Larry was retired from John Deere Insurance and he had previously worked for Iowa Mutual Insurance for twenty years. He graduated DeWitt High School in 1958 and attended Clinton Community College.
Larry had a passion for planes and golf. He learned to fly at the age of sixteen. His father had served as an officer and pilot in the United States Army during WWII in Corsicana, Texas and flew the 'Hump' to Burma. Larry could always be found on a golf course. Highlights were attending the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia and playing several courses in Ireland with family which included Ballybunion. He will be missed greatly and the family will hold a private memorial at a future date.
