Mary Margaret Matz Johannsen (1926-2020)

Clinton – Mary Margaret Matz Johannsen, 94, of Clinton entered eternal life on August 22, 2020, while at Alverno, Clinton, Iowa.

She was born on June 27, 1926 to William A. and Mary Klein Matz in Clinton. She attended Mount St. Claire High School and College.

She married Earl (Mike) A. Johannsen on November 21, 1950. She was an associate of the Order of St. Francis.

She worked for Schick Hospital, Clinton National Bank, and the Clinton Community School District as a secretary.

Mary enjoyed life and acted on her beliefs. She took an active role in the Interfaith Interracial Council because she valued social justice and civil rights. She was involved in PTA supporting parents, students and teachers of the public schools. She was an advocate for the sexual assault program at the YWCA. She and her late husband delivered Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed knitting, reading, cooking, baking, and making wreaths. She was dedicated to her husband, children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Margaret is lovingly remembered by her children Michael (Sue) Johannsen, Mary Christine (Gary) Stuedemann, and Anne Marie (Dwight) Oxley, grandchildren Ben (Emily) Johannsen and Matt (Shelley Quade) Johannsen, Alicia and Michael (Morgan) Stuedemann, Willie Oxley, great-grandchildren Madison Stuedemann, Luke and Olivia Johannsen; her brother-in-law Ray (Maxine) Johannsen; her nieces, Mary Jo Matz McCabe and Dawn Johannsen Dalziel, and nephews, William Matz and Erik Johannsen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl (Mike) Johannsen, and infant son, Paul, her parents and her brother and sister-in-law, Reynold and Genevieve Matz.

Due to COVID 19 pandemic there will be no visitation. Friends are asked to lift up thoughts of unity and love.

A private funeral service will be on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. Interment will be at St. Boniface Cemetery, Clinton. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Ben Johannsen, Matt Johannsen, Alicia Stuedemann, Michael Stuedemann, and Willie Oxley.

Memorials or donations may be made to The Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton. The family sincerely thanks those who provided care and compassion at Prairie Hills Assisted Living and the Alverno.
