Lou Behrend, 69, of DeWitt, Iowa, died suddenly late Saturday morning, July 25, 2020, at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt.

Louie Daniel Behrend was born August 11, 1950, in Maquoketa to Leonard and Geraldine (Clapp) Behrend. He was a 1968 graduate of Maquoketa High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa. Lou married Carla Muhlhausen July 6, 1974, at First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa. Lou was a teacher for many years in the Preston School District and was a substitute teacher in retirement at DeWitt and Maquoketa schools. He was affectionately known as “Mr. B” by the students. He loved teaching, especially the younger students and was known for making Science “fun”.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, DeWitt, Preston Community Education Association, Iowa Education Association, University of Northern Iowa and Clinton Community College Alumni Associations and the National Education Association. Lou was active in the Old Majestic Players Theater Group and was on the Board of Directors of the Creative Learning Center. He took great interest in the Hurstville Interpretive Center, Maquoketa and was a proud member of the Democratic Party. Lou took great pride in the care of their home and yard and will be remembered for the many inflatables that he displayed for the different holidays. Lou is most known for his unconditional love for others and his generous spirit. This continues even after his death by giving to others through the Organ Donation Network.

Surviving are his wife Carla; his daughters, Ang (Tracy Reynolds) Behrend of Davenport and Kim Behrend of DeWitt; his siblings and their spouses, Charlotte and Allen McCloy of Monmouth, Iowa, Bill and Ann Behrend of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Roland and Kay Behrend of Calamus, Iowa, and Betty and Rich Priester of Spring Branch, Texas; the Muhlhausen clan as well as nieces and nephews.

Preceding Lou in death were his parents and his mother-in-law, JoAnn Muhlhausen.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2020. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2020, at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt with the Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating. Interment will follow.
