Mary Joe Dykstra, age 81 of Clinton, passed away Saturday, July 11, 2020 at her home. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 16th at Immaculate Conception Church in Fulton. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the funeral time Thursday at the church. For those wishing to attend masks will be required while in the church. Pallbearers will be Philip and Patrick Newton, Dan Ebensberger, Julian Cuatlatt and Bill and Tom Spalding. Following the service cremation rites will be accorded with burial in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mary Joe was born in Clinton on October30, 1938, the daughter of Thomas Owens and Mary C. (Naughton) McMahon. She graduated from Mt. St. Clare Academy in 1957 and attending Clinton Community College. Mary Joe married Cecil Dykstra in 1964. Cecil passed away in 1989. She was employed as a secretary, payroll clerk with the Clinton Community School District for 23 years. She also worked for the American Red Cross, Alert (ADM) and was with Fulton Concrete Construction from 1986 thru 2017. Mary Joe was a member of Immaculate Conception Church where she ushered and counted money. She also belonged to the National Educational Secretary Association, Iowa State Educational Secretary Association, and the Clinton Educational Secretary Association where she held the positions of Treasurer, Vice President and President. She enjoyed spending time with her family, tending to her flower garden and plants and going to estate sales.
Mary Joe is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Danny) Ebensberger of Clinton; 2 sons, Thomas R. (Beth) Spalding of Clinton and Bill (Faye) Spalding of Salem, AR; 2 step-daughters, Laura and Lynn Dykstra; 6 grandchildren, Tabitha Spalding, Andy Spalding, Jake Spalding, Ben Spalding, Philip Newton and Patrick Newton; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis (Dean) Eggers of Clinton; a sister-in-law, Kathy McMahon of Minier, IL and her special friend and companion of many years, John Dietz of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil; a sister, Carol McMahon and a brother, Larry McMahon. Memorials may be made in Mary Joe's name to Immaculate Conception Church.
