Clinton Mirror Oct 28, 1911
Died. At his home in this city on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 25th, Mr. Jay H. Dunham, aged 62 years. Though long in failing health the passing of so respected and long-time resident occasions deep regret. Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., July 17, 1849, Mr. Dunham removed to Lyons with his parents at an early age, his father soon after erecting the house on South Tenth St. which has ever since been the family homestead and in which the son breathed his last. Jan Dunham grew to manhood in Lyons and spent almost all his active life in this vicinity; for the last fifteen years he was a member of the real-estate firm of Dunham & Barker of Clinton. He married Miss Anna Toll of Clinton in 1879, a singularly happy union, which was broken by the death of the devoted wife in February, 1910. His immediate family consisted of three daughters, Mabel, teaching at Elwood, Helen, a teacher in the Clinton High School, and Edith, a student at Grinnell, -- all were with him at his death. He is also survived by one brother, Merton Dunham of Los Angeles, and two sisters, Mrs. W. W. Leslie of Clinton, and Miss Emma, who had very recently returned here after a lengthy residence in the west. Always active and public-spirited Mr. Dunham was especially earnest in religious work, and was for thirty years the faithful superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School in Clinton. His funeral was conducted from the scene of his long labors on Friday afternoon.
