Word was received today of the death of Edward Downs, who passed away at a hospital in Dubuque. No further particulars could be learned but the remains are expected to arrive in Fulton tonight. He leaves one sister, Miss Nellie Downs of Fulton and one brother, John, of Minnesota. Mr. Downs was connected with the Patent Novelty Works in Fulton.

The funeral of Edward Downs was held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception church with a solemn requiem high mass celebrated by Rev. Father McClellan, assisted by Rev. Father Rohling as deacon and Rev. Father Clancy as sub-deacon. Edward Downs was popular and well beloved in this city, retaining through life the friendship and esteem he had won in the days of his boyhood and young manhood. He was a young man of splendid character and high integrity, attributes which contributed largely to the success which had characterized his life. He was happily endowed with the faculty of making friends, with a never failing geniality which won admiration everywhere and these friends were always enduring. In business life he had earned an enviable position, being one of the stockholders of the Patent Novelty company. He had attained a place of high trust and wide responsibility until his health failed him about six months ago. His untimely death thus closes a career brilliant with promise. Today he is widely mourned. The intelligence of his death was received with deepest sorrow by all who had been his associates in former years, who had followed his successful career with pleasure, and who continued to cherish for him a friendship whose lustre had not been dimmed by the passing years of his life.
The business houses were all closed during the funeral to show honor and respect to the deceased. Edward Downs was born in Fulton and was 51 years, 10 months and 6 days of age at the time of death. he leaves to mourn his loss his sister, Miss Nelle with whom he made his home, and one brother, John, of Minneapolis, also a host of friends.
The casket was attended by James O'Brien, Frank Monahan, John Ferry, M. Ingwersen, Dr. George Thompson, Peter Thompson, George Reimers and W. G. Riordon. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. The out of town people were: Mr. and Mrs. Daniel lenard and daughter Mary of Harmond, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O'Connor of Aurora, Mrs. Barnett, Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Lee and Daniel Martian of Chicago, Mrs. Fred Haines, Mrs. Lizzie Harvey and Mrs. John Tracey of Sterling, Miss Mary Carroll of Davenport, Mr. L. A. Lemke and Mr. Right of Chicago, Mr. Volkman of Davenport, Mr. Daniel Considine of Savanna, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Langdon, Mrs. John Gerten, Mrs. John Collins, Mrs James Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Purcell, Mr. and Mrs. James Henry, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henley of Clinton and Miss Davison of Albert Lea, Minn.
