Augustus Gabriel was born at Meissen, Saxony, Germany Nov. 8, 1821, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frances Peters, March 28, 1915 at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 20 days. He was a member of Co. K 26th Iowa Infantry. He served his country for 3 years and was honorably discharged in 1864. The deceased was a member of the Post at Lyons and coming to Cherokee to make his home, joined Custer Post of which he was a very enthusiastic member. Mr. Gabriel was united in marriage to Anna Hockholzer Oct. 22, 1847 at Oswego, N.Y. where they lived until 1855. He then moved to Lyons, Iowa, remaining there for 45 years. To this union 9 children were born. His wife preceded him to the great beyond Jan. 5, 1898, also two children, Henry, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Eva Cunningham, who died March 7, 1902 at Salem, Ore.

He leaves to mourn his loss 5 sons and two daughters, 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. His children are Mrs. L. B. Durling, Mayville, Wis., John C. of Cloverdale, Cal., Fred of Chicago, Ed of Modesto, and Harry of Huntingburg, Ind.
