Dr. Paul E. Hagenson, 90, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 14 at Prairie Hills where he resided the final years of his life. As per his wishes, a private ceremony was held at Pine Grove Cemetery where he was laid to rest. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
The youngest of six children, Paul was born to Gus and Hazel Hagenson of Clinton on December 27, 1929. He served four years in the Navy, on a submarine off the coast of Cuba. He remembered his days in the service fondly, especially near the end of his life.
After his stint in the Navy, Paul enrolled in the University of Iowa, where he obtained his BA and DDS degrees. He met his wife, Barbara Sue Work, at the University in an honors English class. He then set up his orthodontics practice in Clinton where he practiced for many years. A life-long Hawkeye fan, Paul loved his seats on the 50-yard line at Kinnick Stadium.
Paul was a member of several organizations, including Rotary International, Ducks Unlimited and the Clinton County Conservation board, which named a pond after him for his many years of dedicated service.
An avid outdoorsman, Paul's happiest times were spent at his cabin, which he transformed from a modest dwelling to one with a huge stone fireplace and sweeping views of the mighty Mississippi. His "to-do" list of cabin projects was never-ending, and he had ideas jotted on multiple pieces of paper at any given time.
Paul never met a stranger, and he'd likely give you the shirt off his back or buy you a drink, depending on which you needed more. He was quick with a joke, most of which were tried and true.
Paul is survived by three daughters, Susan (Takashi Konishi) Hagenson of Clinton, IA; Kristin Bienert of Detroit, MI; and Kari (Brad) Hemingway of Rockledge, FL, as well as three grandchildren, Tyler, Alexis and Brody Hemingway. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Lois Haring of Clinton, IA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Ernest and Eugene and 2 sisters, Esther and Helen. Memorials may be made in Paul's name to the Clinton County Conservation Board.
