18 June 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser page 7

The body of Russell Moore, the Camanche young man who was drowned last Friday at 12 o'clock in Rock River, near Sterling, Ill., was brought to Camanche for burial today. Funeral services are to be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Baptist church, the Rev. Osborne, officiating. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Acting as pall bearers were Elmer Shockey, Merlin Illiff, Tommy Fletcher, Jessie James, Carl Rower and Theophilus Rhyner.

An inquest will be held the first part of this week at Rockford, Ill., to determine the facts of the drowning.

According to the story told by friends, Russell had been on a clamming trip with two Muscatine young men. He was returning alone from marketing a boat load of clams, when he decided to secure another load. While at work, his boat caught on a snag in the water. He immediately began unloosening the craft, when it is thought he slipped and fell head first upon the stool of the boat, hitting himself in the middle of the forehead and tumbling into the deep water. The fall stunned him for the time, which prevented an attempt to save himself, the young man being an excellent swimmer. Marks between the eyes and on the bridge of the nose led to the above conclusion.

Although the accident took place about noon Friday, the body was not recovered until 7 o'clock Saturday morning, when it was found by Tommy Frazier and Theophilus Rhyner. His disappearance was not noticed until supper time Friday, when on his failure to return to camp, his companions set out on a search for him. The finding of his overturned boat was the first knowledge that drowning was the youth's fate.

The deceased was born Feb. 4, 1898 at Camanche, Ia., where he resided all his life. He attended Camanche public schools after which he secured employment at the car barns of the C.D. & M. railroad company, where he worked during the winter months. He was an expert clammer, this being his occupation when the river was open.

Surviving to mourn his loss besides his stricken parents are two sisters, Bessie and Edna, and one brother, Lauren.
