BROMMELKAMP, HOLLISTER, JOHANNSEN

Ken Brommelkamp, 70, of DeWitt, Iowa, died peacefully early Monday morning, June 17, 2019, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Kenneth Donald Brommelkamp was born August 19, 1948, in Elgin, Illinois, the fifth and youngest child of Edwin and Dora (Hollister) Brommelkamp. His sister often reminded him of his status as “the baby."

He graduated from Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois, and attempted to join the Air Force at a time when the Armed Forces weren't exactly picky about who they welcomed into their ranks. However, his inability to march in time coupled with surgery for a double hernia earned him a ticket back to Illinois. Shortly afterward he met, married and later divorced Kathy Schellenberg.

On June 3, 1978 he married Sheryl Ann Johannsen at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The couple remained happily married for 41 years.

Ken was employed by Allied Steel in Clinton until it closed in 1984. He then landed a job at Howard Steel in Davenport, where he worked until his retirement on September 9, 2013. He was a member of the Iron Workers Local 111 and took pride in preparing steel for construction projects across the area.

A self-taught jack of all trades, Ken enjoyed working on various projects and renovated much of his family’s DeWitt home on his own through the years. He enjoyed spending time with family, which was particularly noticeable during wedding receptions. In recent years nothing was more important to him than time spent with his grandson. Ken also enjoyed morning coffee with the guys, which he had just finished on June 12 before suffering a major stroke. After years of living and working through mild (and sometimes major) discomfort, he became pain-free five days later with his family at his bedside.

Surviving are his wife, Sheryl; his sons, Todd (Andrea) Brommelkamp of Cedar Rapids and Jeffrey Harkins of Hollister, Missouri; his grandson, Thomas Brommelkamp; siblings, Peter (Ann) Brommelkamp of McHenry, Illinois, Frederick (Vickie) Brommelkamp of Rudoph, Wisconsin, and Suzanne Troxell of Island Lake, Illinois. He will also be remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Ken in death were his parents, a brother, Robert Brommelkamp, a brother-in-law, Tom Troxell and two nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 10:00 until 10:45 AM, Friday, June 21, 2019. A service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the funeral home with Pastor Dianne Prichard officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. A luncheon will follow at Buzzy’s Tap, Welton.

Condolences may be expressed and a photo tribute viewed at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com.
