Matilda McErlain, was born August 18, 1833, at Cleveland, Ohio. In the year 1847 she removed with her parents to South Bend, Indiana, where her father assisted Rev. Father Sorrin, founder of the Notre Dame University, in erecting the log church for many years used as a place of worship. Her father died there in 1855 and was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining the university. In the year of 1857 she came to Iowa, and lived for some time on a farm near DeWitt. On Feb. 4th, 1866, she was united in marriage in DeWitt with Edward Quigley, who passed away Sept. 18, 1899. She is the last of a family of nine children, several of her brothers being prominent business men of DeWitt many years ago. After her husband's death she continued housekeeping for some time and then went to live with her children. She in turn stayed with each of them until a few years ago, when she went to make her home permanently with her daughter, Mrs. Teresa Hines and here the summons found her at the noon hour, Thursday, September 28th, after an illness of one week. Fifty nine years were lived in the heart of our community. She had been a faithful member of the Catholic church all her life, always faithful to her profession, and while able was always in the line of willing workers. She was a home-loving woman and will be remembered for her kindly and motherly qualities by her children, grand children and neighbors of many years. Being retiring and unassuming her influence is known in her own home and to this kind "Home is not the stately palace, with its acres stretching far, Home is not the cottage under those outspreading branches yonder, Home is where the loved ones are." Four lives owe their existence to her two in infancy passing beyond. The other two are Edward Quigley and Mrs. Teresa Hines of DeWitt. Six grand children are also left to mourn the loss of a devoted grand mother. Many a childish burden has been lightened by her sympathetic touch and such a life should leave an impress upon those around her which will live on while yet she sleeps.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock when a solemn requiem mass was pronounced over her remains. Rev. J. J. Nelson, celebrant, assisted by Rev. Couglan and Rev. Riordan. The full church choir furnished the music and Frank Elsesser beautifully sang a solo, "Face to Face." The pall bearers were William Flannery, of Eagle Grove, and R. B. Wolfe, M. F. Kelly, J. V. Bloom, M. T. Conwell and P. J. McDonald of DeWitt. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
