Funeral services for the late N. T. Baird were held Saturday afternoon in the United Presbyterian church, conducted by the former pastor, Rev. M. L. Neill of Rock Island. Bearers of the pall were: John Robb, Jasper Hownt, J. Merritt, J. A. Hannum, Ed. Cousins and John Turner.

Mr. N. T. Baird was born May 31, 1837, in Guernsey county, O. He moved to Warren county, Ill. in 1868. He volunteered as a soldier in the war of the rebellion in August, 1861, and served until December, 1862. During these months of service for his country he served upon the battle fields of Pea Ridge, Corinth, Beonville and Perryville. He was wounded eight days after the latter, being crushed by a wagon. From this injury he suffered internally for years and never enjoyed full restoration to health, the weakness thus caused leading to his death. He was a member of the L. N. Howard post No. 92, the members of which were present at the funeral to honor his memory and the service he rendered his country. He came back to Illinois after being mustered out where he resided until 1866 when he came to Clinton county, where he has resided ever since, living for a time in the vicinity of Grand Mound. He was married Aug. 17, 1870 to Miss Nancy Johnston, at Columbus city, Ia. To this union were born four children all of whom have already passed to the beyond. Mr. Baird professed his faith in Jesus in early youth and united with the U.P. church at Clear Fork, Ohio. He has continued to be a faithful member of this branch of the church ever since having served as an elder many years. He is survived by his devoted companion in life, one brother, James Baird of Winterset, Ia., and four grandchildren of DeWitt. Also many other surviving relatives and friends.
