DeWitt, Sept. 4 -- Salem Cotton was born January 1, 1833, in Austitown, Ohio; he passed away on August 30, 1913, aged 80 years and 8 months. He was a descendant of John Cotton, the first preacher of Boston, Mass.
When a lad of 11 years he came with his parents to Clinton county, Iowa, where they settled on a farm near DeWitt. He received his education in the common schools of the town and at Griswold college, Davenport, Iowa.
He was married Feb. 14, 1860 to Mercy Brown of DeWitt. To them were born six children, Nelson Mack, Wickliff W. of St. Lawrence, S. D., Mrs. L. F. Easter of Stanley, Wis., Bertha, Grace and John, the wife and four children survive him, Nelson Mack and Grace preceding him into the life beyond. He has four living grandchildren, children of W. W. Cotton of South Dakota. His sister, Mrs. T. C. Pascal, four years older than himself, and the last of several brothers and sisters, also survive.
His early married life was spent on a farm near DeWitt. He moved to town in 1867, where he passed the remainder of his life with the exception of sixteen years, which he spent in pioneer farming in South Dakota.
He was affiliated with no church, although he was a frequent attendant at church services.
He was public-spirited and always interested in everything that advanced the welfare of his community.
Although so advanced in years, no one realized it, so youthful was his spirit. He was a man of quiet ways and gentle manner, and all who knew him loved him.
The funeral services were held at his home, Rev. J. Franklin Smith conducting and preaching the sermon, Rev. J. K. Shiffer assisting.
The music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Mitchell, Miss Mary Lawler and George M. Smith. Mrs. Mitchell also sang "Face to Face" as a solo, being accompanied by ?? Large.
