NELSON – Lawrence W. Nelson, 92, of Nelson, died Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Rock River Hospice & Home in Sterling.

Larry was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Harry and June (Thompson) Nelson. He served in the Navy during World War II as Radioman Third Class. He married Florence Shonka in November of 1950, in Clinton, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 9, 2006. Larry was employed for 40 years as a telegrapher for Chicago and North Western Railroad, retiring in 1986. He was a past Master of the Clinton, Iowa Masonic Lodge AF and AM 100, Scottish Rite, KCCH of Clinton, Iowa, York Rite, KYCH of Clinton, Iowa, and past High Priest, past Master and past Commander.

Survivors include two daughters, Melva Broderick of Nelson and Karen Hollenbeck of San Francisco; three grandchildren, Kerri Reigel of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Craig Nelson Reigel of Nelson and Matthew Broderick of Dixon; six great-grandchildren, Michael Special, Nick Special, Kaleb Maloney, Alexander Roberts, Kara Roberts and Ruby June Broderick; and one nephew, Dan Bedeger of Walcott, Iowa.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harry Nelson; one sister, Loess Bedeger; and one granddaughter, Camarie Reigel.

A Masonic service will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls with visitation following from 6 to
8 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brad Wilson of First United Methodist Church in Sterling officiating. Burial of ashes will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Rock River Hospice & Home in Sterling.
