The Clinton Semi-Weekly Age, Mar 26, 1901 Page 4
The many friends in Clinton of S. ?. Smith, station agent for years on the N. W. at Union Grove, are grieved to learn of his sudden and untimely death from pleuro pneumonia. A splendid fellow, born and reared on a farm home in Clyde, north of Morrison, educated in the district schools, Morrison schools and at Beloit, a student of telegraphy at Morrison, and ever since agent at Union Grove, the circle of his life was rounded out among his friends, and scenes of his childhood, and there he died as he had lived, esteemed and loved. Noble in all things, he found in the Encampment branch of Odd Fellowship much to attract him, and where the famous Morrison staff went, there he was as one of the watches -- and well he taught the lessons. In the prime of vigorous manhood he dies, when life seem most promising and useful. The funeral occurs at 3 today.
