The Clinton Semi-Weekly Age, Feb 26, 1901 Page 3
Many people in this part of the county knew Mrs. Martha Hauke, one of the mothers of the county, who reared her family here, all of whom have shown the impress of her mind in their lives. She is dead, passing away at 6:30 Sunday morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James McCone, 223 Fourth avenue, at a good old age.
Miss Martha Polhamus was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, June 5, 1824, and consequently was over 77 years of age. Over fifty years ago, she with her husband Mr. Hauke, came to Clinton county, and settled on a farm a few miles west of this city, remaining there many years. For a time after leaving the farm, they made their home in Camanche, but two years ago, upon the death of the husband of the deceased, the latter came to this city, to make her home with her daughter. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, always a zealous worker in church circles, and lived a devout, Christian life. Her death is deeply mourned by a wide circle of warm friends.
Mrs. Hauke is survived by three sons and three daughters, who are: Mrs. James McCone of Clinton; Mrs. Freeman Crosby of Morrison; Mrs. Albert Jameyson of Camanche; William H. Hauke of Bangor, Mich.; Thomas E. Hauke on the old homestead west of Clinton; and George Irwin Hauke of Wood River, Neb. Mrs. Crosby of Morrison arrived from that city Friday, and was at her mother's bedside at the time of her death, with the other members of the family who reside in the vicinity.
The funeral will be held from the McCone residence on Fourth avenue at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Camanche.
