Marvin L. "Buster" Herkelman, 102, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 3 P.M., Monday, January 15, 2018, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 2 P.M. Cremation will follow the funeral service and burial will be at a later date at the Elwood, Iowa Cemetery.

Marvin LaVerne Herkelman was born on April 28, 1915 on a farm near Elwood, Iowa the youngest of nine children to William and Louise Pauline (Goos) Herkelman. He was a 1933 graduate of Elwood High School. He married Eva Francelia Hamilton on February 17, 1937 in Rock Island, Illinois. They were together for over 70 years prior to her passing on May 3, 2007.

"Buster" had first farmed west of Elwood and then settled south of Elwood from 1937 until retiring to Maquoketa in July of 1975. In retirement he continued to help his son Earl "Dude" Galloway farm as well as the Becker family.

"Buster" had been a member of the Elwood United Methodist Church and then transferred to the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and watching sports, especially his son Bill's teams.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Earl "Dude" (Joan) Galloway of Lost Nation, IA, and Terre (Judy) Herkelman of Henderson, NV; a daughter-in-law, Donna Herkelman of Clinton, IA; 8 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren; a special niece Darleen Simmons of Maquoketa, IA; and all the Fey kids. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eva, brothers C. Elwin, Waldo, Arnold and Leo, sisters Elise, Eunice, Velma and Dorothy, a son Bill and his wife, Adena (Schmidt) Herkelman.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Elwood Cemetery Association, First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa or the Elwood United Methodist Church.
