J. R. Bather
PASSES PEACEFULLY AWAY AT HIS HOME
A quiet falling asleep, as if in a peaceful slumber, marked the close of the life of John R. Bather, the florist, at his home on Camanche avenue, yesterday afternoon at 2. He had been ill for some days, which, coupled with his feebleness, the result of long years of nearly incessant toil, left him an easy prey to the king, Death.
Though not possessed of a large circle of business acquaintances, because he remained closely at his home, where his hot houses were located - and they showed his ever present hand and care, for after his touch would spring forth lovely blossoms, sweet flowers and bright foliage; and even in his delirium he was busied among his plants.
He did not live alone for his flowers, but about his fireside grew a large family, nearly to man and woman hood, before they were called upon to part with his ever pleasant word and cheery greeting. He loved his children as only a generous, true hearted man could, and they worshiped him. His chiding was more like a love making than otherwise, but it brought immediate obedience. To his long time companion this morning comes life devoid of much of its brightness. Side by side they had lived and labored for the same purpose, and there had been few times in their life when they were separated more than a few hours, then to know that the evening would be spent in each other's company - for the fireside was their lodge, and sewing circle.
Thus he lived - loved best by his own family, but admired by all, great and small, who knew him. Thus he will be remembered.
He was born in Manchester, Eng., Nov. 7, 1827, and was thus sixty-six years old the 7th of the present month. When twenty-one years old he came to America, locating in Albany, N. Y. where he lived nine years. There he was married, and with Mrs. Bather came to Clinton nearly thirty-five years ago - Dec. 14 - and had since resided here at the same place on Camanche avenue. Until Sunday morning he was thought to be improving.
The family circle was first broken by the death of a little boy some years ago, and again by the death of the eldest daughter, Agnes, a few years ago.
The funeral arrangements are not perfected, owing to the prostration of Miss Ruth, who arrived from Des Moines Monday morning, in answer to a telegram. She is afflicted with heart trouble and has been quite ill since reaching home. It is expected it will be held Thursday.
Frank, the eldest son, who was taken ill the same day as his father was confined, is still very low.
Many friends sympathize with the grief stricken and aflicted family.
