Mr. Rolf J. Schnack, 88, of DeWitt, Iowa, died peacefully Friday afternoon, May 12, 2017, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.
Rolf John Helmut Schnack was born January 24, 1929, in Kiel, Germany to Albert and Agnes (Schnack) Oppermann. He was educated in German Schools, receiving his Masters Degree in Music Performance from Lubeck Conservatory of Music. Rolf performed as a concert clarinetist and as a consummate musician also played accordion and piano. On March 24, 1951, Rolf married Edith Luise Schnack in Kiel, Germany, where daughters Heidi and Monica were born. The family immigrated to the United States in March of 1957, and were blessed with three more sons, Michael, Thomas and Rick. The family resided in DeWitt, where the couple owned and operated Schnack Piano Service and E-Z Wash Laundromat. They retired to Lake of the Ozarks and returned to DeWitt in 2003. Edith preceded Rolf in death November 10, 2009.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Some of his fondest memories were playing his accordion at various gatherings of family and friends. Rolf loved the years spent living at Lake of the Ozarks where he could drive his boat every day. He loved time spent with his dear family and friends. Music was his life.
Surviving are daughters, Heidi (Garner) Mattingly of Ada, Oklahoma and Dr. Monica Schnack of Bloomington, Illinois; sons, Thomas (Christy) Schnack, of Hitchcock, Texas and Rick (Connie) Schnack of DeWitt; grandchildren, Karin (Cody) Allen, Jon Mattingly, Jami, Kara, Katelynn, Nikki, Kaden and Silence Schnack as well as several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Rolf was preceded in death by a son, Michael and his parents.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017. A Service of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to Westwing Place or Grace Lutheran Church.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Jon Mattingly, Cody Allen, Katelynn and Nikki Schnack, as well as Alex Pappas and Taylan Dunlavey.
