Rick Lawrence Abbott died April 24, 2017 at his family home in Camanche. His funeral service will be 11:00am Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 808 3rd St., Camanche. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30am to the service time at the church. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Rick was born June 1, 1957 in Clinton, Iowa to Phyllis (Lanphere) and Ross Abbott. Rick is survived by his mother: Phyllis Abbott of Camanche, his brother, David (Kirsten) of Charlotte, N.C., his nieces and nephew, Taylor, Ryan, and Ingred Abbott, as well as many special cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
Rick attended school in Marathon, Florida and Davenport, Iowa.
Rick was very artistic, attending ceramic classes throughout his life starting at age 4. He enjoyed working with customers at Clinton Art Gallery as well as at ceramic shops in Davenport, Camanche, Clinton, and Lyons. He won many 1st place awards in ceramics at the Morrison Fair.
He belonged to several ceramic clubs and clown clubs in the area. He would be a clown and paint faces at Camanche Days, as well as at Davenport, Maquoketa and Dubuque events. He enjoyed bowling with many high scoring games.
He worked at a factory but could not tolerate the noise and did not have the strength to do the work. He loved to travel to Idaho, California, Wisconsin, Michigan and wherever he could find a place to camp. He loved boating. He spent many summer evenings staying overnight in the family camper in the backyard with his brother and friends in Davenport.
Rick started collecting Wizard of Oz items at age 4 and had met many of the actors of the original movie.
Rick always had a smile no matter the circumstance and was often called Smiley. He liked people. Everyone he met was like a friend.
Rick had a special friend, Alice Srp, who was with he and his mother throughout his illness. He enjoyed Alices grandchildren visiting and rading the candy Jar.
Memorials may be given to St. Marks United Methodist Church.
