Gary was born in Clinton on December 23, 1941, the son of Albert "Obbie" and Marion (Wilson) Munson. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1960 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Dubuque in 1964. He married Kay Fromang on November 9, 1962 in Dubuque. Kay passed away tragically on April 15, 2009. He missed Kay tremendously, while still grieving the emotional, sudden loss of his son, David, age 21. Gary was employed at Standard Brands in Clinton from 1964 to 1971. He was production manager at Ralston Purina from 1971 to 1984 and was then employed at National By-Products from 1984 until his retirement. He also owned and operated the Wheel-Inn Marina in Sabula from 1979 to 1983. After his retirement, his days were spent helping others through his business, Munson Construction, until 2010. Gary was an active, busy person, rarely seen relaxing, during his active years. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and they were a huge focus of his life, as he was of their lives.

Gary was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Thirteeners Fraternity (13ers) at the University of Dubuque. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, being on the river scavenger hunting, and spending time with his buddy Ray Wiersema, fraternity brother, Harlan "Fish" Fischer, friend Tom Palsgrove, and family friends, Bonnie and Harley Dubeck. He liked going to car swap meets, and was an avid Arnie Beswick memorabilia collector. He also supported the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes where his granddaughters attend college.

Gary is survived by his son, Gary S. Munson, Jr. (past wife, Danielle) of Clinton; his daughter, Kaylyn "Lyn" (Jeff) Dickinson of Clinton; five grandchildren, Alexis, Erin, Mackenna, Annelise and Matthew; a sister, Judy (Jack) Phillips of Chandler, AZ, a special cousin Steve "Brody" Wilson, and nieces; Patrea (Troy) Aeschliman, Jennifer Johnson, nephews; Brad (Tammy) Johnson, Mike (Dana) Phillips, Troy (Kacey) Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David on August 14, 1988, and an uncle, Marvin Munson, who was killed in "friendly fire" action at Cassino, Italy while serving with the United States Army during W.W. II. - See more at: http://obituaries.clintonherald.com/story/gary-munson-sr-1941-2017-897428982#sthash.upkTKiKu.dpuf
