Donald Earl Mace, age 87, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will take place in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Savanna with Military Rites accorded by the Savanna VFW Post #2223. Visitation will be held from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. prior to the Mass in Antl Hall at the church. Friends and family are invited to share in Don's life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Don was born May 12, 1929 in Sabula, Iowa, the son of Earl Roy and Elsie Marie (Hatheway) Mace. He attended Savanna High School and graduated with the Class of 1947. Don enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served for seven years. He then joined the United States Airforce and Honorably retired. While serving his country, Don met the love of his life, Helen Edith Kreason. They were married on May 12, 1956 in Baseline, Michigan. Don and Helen recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Following his retirement from the Airforce, Don went to work for CB & Q Railroad and later Carlon in Clinton for 22 years as an electrician.
Don was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the American Legion Post VanBibber-Hanson #148 in Savanna. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and was excited to see them win the World Series. Don enjoyed listening to Big Band music and dancing with Helen. Don treasured the time he spent fishing and traveling through all 50 states in their motorhome, always taking the backroads for the best scenic views. Most of all Don loved his family and his friends.
Don will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Helen; four children, Donald (Sheila) Mace of Camanche, Iowa, Patricia Mace of Davenport, Iowa, Kelly Mace of East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Laura (Daniel) Raineri of Lake Zurich, Illinois; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Shirley) Mace of Arizona, and a sister, Myrna (Ronald) Sisler of Riverview, Illinois.
