The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, March 26, 1886

Died

VANDEVETER, at his home in this city, on the evening of the 22nd instant James Flournoy VanDeveter, aged 23 years.

Thus passes from earth one of the brightest and most brilliant young man of Clinton. To eulogize him as his brief life would permit, would, if possible, open wider the heart wounds of the sorrow stricken family, and we forbear. Words cannot console, Faith in the Divinity and hope in a future life, can only reconcile the sorrowing household to their seemingly unbearable infliction. In their great loss the entire community extends a sympathy deep-scaled and heartfelt.

The funeral took place yesterday at 1:30 p.m. with impressive services at St. John’s Church by Rev. James Trimble. The many friends of the deceased filled the church to do the last sad honors to his dead. The floral offering were many and beautiful, and were largely composed of Marshal Neil roses, the favorite flower of the deceased. Among the offering appeared the beautiful floral piece, “Gates Ajar,” worked in Marshal Neil roses, hyacinths and smilax; a broken circle and star, of tuberoses, Marshal Neil roses and lilies; a pillow of Marshal Neil roses and their own foliage surmounted by a crown of roses, jasmine and verbenas; a basket of calla lilies; a basket of Marshal Neil roses; bouquets of lilies. The casket of black velvet was strewn with roses and lilies and at the head lay a beautiful cross in white flowers. At the conclusion of the service the remains were taken to the family lot in Springdale, where the last sad rites were observed.
