Died

At his home near Bryant, Jan. 1st at 2 p.m., Captain Svendsen, aged 80 years. Edward Johann Detlef Svendsen was born in Kiel, Holstein Oct. 9th, 1829. As a volunteer he served in the Schleswig-Holstein war two years. Coming to America in 1851 he stopping first at Davenport, but soon after settled in Clinton County. In 1862 he joined the noted 26th Iowa Infantry, going out as Lieutenant and returning as Captain. After the war he revisited his aged mother in Germany, in 1865. In Holstein in 1866, he married Caroline Reiff, and they came to America that year, to the farm near Bryant, where they have lived since.

To them were born seven children – Clara, Lydia, Julia and Edward, at home, Mrs. Mathilda Bolck of Almont, Mrs. Ida Petersen of Whiting, Iowa, and Alfred of North Yakima, Wash.

Capt. Svendsen was an excellent solider and officer, an honored citizen, and stood high in the regards of all. Mrs. Svendsen and all the children survive him. His funeral was held Thursday, the 6th, with interment at Ingwersen Cemetery.
