Shirley Nadine Daniels, age 82, of Miles, Iowa was a loving, caring, and compassionate mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Shirley passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, with her family by her side. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. A funeral service will be held11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at the Miles Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place in Miles Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2016 at the church. A memorial has been established in her memory. Shirley was born at home in Miles on November 7, 1934, the daughter of Harold G. and Kathryn (Nichols) Yates. She attended the Miles Elementary and Miles High School, graduating in 1952 with high honors in scholastic and music honors. She had the honor of being chosen twice to play saxophone in the Iowa High School All-State Band in 1949 and 1951. Shirley was also a member of the Miles Girls Softball and Basketball Team. Her 1952 basketball won the District Tournament in Cedar Rapids her senior year.
It was in Miles High School that she met the love of her life, Wayne Daniels. Shirley and Wayne were married on November 29, 1952. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in November of 2014. Wayne preceded Shirley in death on July 4, 2015. Shirley was a member of the Miles Presbyterian Church, The United Presbyterian Women, and volunteered for the Kids' Hope program at East Central School. She was the church organist at the Miles Presbyterian Church for many years as well as playing for weddings and funerals. She also had many piano students. Her love of life included attending sporting events and music programs that her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved in. She was happiest when she was with her family and friends. Her work experience included working in the kitchen at Miles School while her children attended school there, and being part owner with Wayne of Wayne's Feed Store in Miles. In 1980 she began working at the Savanna Army Depot where she served in multiple positions from clerk typist, to library duties, then historical research at the Technical Center for Explosive Safety and lastly, Management Analyst. In the fall of 1999, she retired from the Savanna Army Depot and the Defense Ammunition Center and School in Savanna. After retirement she worked part time at the Jackson County Clerk Office and the Miles Telephone Company.
Shirley will be dearly missed by her six children, Lynn (Karen) Daniels of Miles, Laurie (Michael) Wildes of DeWitt, Iowa, Rhonda (Keith) Fogel of Clinton, Gregory (Kim) Daniels of Maquoketa, Iowa, Lorin (Karen) Daniels of DeWitt and Beth (Dave) Varner of Clinton; twelve grandchildren, Adam (Erica) Daniels, Jessica (Spencer) Phelps, Justin (Melissa) Daniels, Kathryn (Adam) Gebhart, Amanda and Abby Wildes, Tara (David) Dohrn, Erin (Andy) Merrill, Melissa (Mitch) Phillips, Ashley (Aaron) Schroeder, Audrey (Dylan) Walters and Ryan Daniels; and many great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; a son, Michael in 1995; her parents Kathryn and Harold; two brothers, Arden and Harry; and one sister, Genevieve "Sally" Kuhl.
