Matthew F. Austin, 89, of Clinton, Iowa passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Monday, November 7, 2016. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 12, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Springfield, Louisiana. Burial will take place at the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Springfield, Louisiana. Locally, a visitation will occur from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements locally and the N. A. James Funeral Home in Hammond are in charge of arrangements in Louisiana.
Matthew was born March 1, 1927 in Killian, Louisiana, the son of Ernest and Mae (Mitchell) Austin. He served his Country in the U.S. Army from 1946 - 1948. Matthew was united in marriage to Essie Guidry on April 24, 1971 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana - Essie recently passed away in April of this year.

Matthew was a member of the Greater True Love Baptist Church in Clinton. He worked at Ralston Purina as a unit operator, retiring after 20+ years.
As young man Matthew enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. However, after meeting and marrying Essie, his only priority was loving and taking care of her and his family.
Matthew is survived by one daughter - Chiquita Austin of Clinton, IA; one son - Matthew Jr. (Jena) Austin of Clinton, IA; nine grandchildren; two sisters - Pearlie Ducree and Jeanie Doty; three brothers - Cleveland (Barbara) Austin, Julius Austin and Earl (Myrtle) Austin all of Killian, Louisiana with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends he met throughout his life.
Preceding Matthew in death were his parents, his wife Essie, one sister and several brothers.
Memorials made can be directed to the wishes of the family.
