Mary Jane Whalen age 90 of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home and from 1:30 P. M. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon McGrath-Bernhard, Andrea Thieman, Sherry McKay, Dawn Schafer, Chris McGrath, Rebekah Rippy and Meri McGrath. Mary Jane was born in Lyons, Iowa on October 9, 1925, the daughter of William and Jesse (Hansen) Otto. She graduated from Lyons High School. Mary Jane was married to George L. McGrath for 20 years. George passed away in 1968. She later married Marvin J. Whalen on September 4, 1971 and was married to Marvin for 20 years before he passed away in 1991. Mary Jane spent her later years with her beloved companion, Harris “Ted” Taylor, until his death in 2011. Mary Jane worked as a car hop at A and W, later as a telephone operator with Northwestern Bell and for over 30 years worked for, and then managed the DuPont Cellophane Employee’s Credit Union, now 1st Gateway Credit Union. She was a member of the Civilian Police Academy Alumni. She was a wonderful cook and gardener, and enjoyed bowling, traveling the country, and watching her grandkids and great grandkids grow. She always said she had a wonderful life with no regrets. Mary Jane is survived by three children; Sharon Kay McGrath (Mark Mapes) of Sacramento, CA, Jane Wynkoop (Ron, deceased) of Clinton and Richard (Debi) McGrath of Polk City, IA; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, Anna, Catherine and Leona and 2 brothers, Harold and William “Bud” Jr. Online condolences may be left at www.papewfh.com.
