9 July 1909 - The Lowden News

Sunday morning, the 4th, about eleven o'clock, John Rehder fell from the roof of his barn, breaking his neck and killing him instantly. He had noticed that the roof needed repairing in places, and having been a carpenter for years, disdained the idea that he was too old to venture into risky places, took a bunch of shingles and climbed to the barn roof. Just how the accident occurred, no one knows, but it is supposed that he slipped and fell, for his neighbor, John Kanzmeier, heard the noise and went out immediately, finding Mr. Rehder lying on the ground dead. It was a terrible blow to Mrs. Rehder, who had seen him but a few moments before hale and hearty, the next moment to know that he had been called from her forever.

Mr. Rehder was born in Germany in 1834, he was married to Margaret Vogt in 1859. They came to America and direct to Wheatland in 1865.

The loving wife, seven children, twenty-six grandchildren and one great grandchild survive Mr. Rehder to mourn his sudden demise.

Deceased was a member of the Lutheran church in Germany, and his life was a truly, honest, industrious and upright one, the kind that makes for such a man none but lifelong friends.

The funeral services will be held at the residence here Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with services by Rev. Gatermann. -- Wheatland Gazette
