Wayne M. Mommsen, 91, of Clinton, passed away, Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Bickford Cottage, surrounded by his family.

Funeral Services will be 10:30am, Friday, January 29, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church – Andover. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons: Jeff Hudson, Andy Friedrichsen, Adam Friedrichsen, Chad Paisley, Joshua Paisley, and Jeremiah Caves. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00-8:00pm at the church. Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family.

Wayne Marvin Mommsen was born on January 30, 1924 in Clinton County, Iowa the son of John and Helen (Matthiesen) Mommsen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church – Preston. He and his dad and brother Glen showed many Grand Champion carloads of cattle at the Chicago International also at the American Royal and Louisville. He was a 1941 graduate of Miles High School.

Wayne married Berniece Smith on February 23, 1947; she preceded him in death on October 13, 1987. He later married Berdetta Papke on October 29, 1988; she died July 10, 2012.
Wayne farmed his entire life near Andover until retiring in 1987. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he was past-president and served on the church council. He also sang in the church choir for many years. He served on the Andover Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, was a member of the Miles 4-H Baby Beef Club where he won many trophies, and a 4-H leader of the Elk River Jr. Feeder Club for 10 years. He was a director and past president of the Miles and East Central School Board, and served on the Miles Savings and Metro bank board for 30 years. He was a charter member of the Andover Lions Club and also a member, past president and treasurer of the Sabula Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed playing golf every day that he could, fishing, and playing cards. Spending time with his family was very important to him.

Wayne is survived by four daughters: LaVonne (William) Hudson of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Judy (Denis) Friedrichsen of Clinton, Cindy (Dave) Heilmann of Goose Lake, Iowa, and Bonnie (Clint) Paisley of Aurora, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; his stepchildren: Nancy (David) Luscombe of Cedar Park, Texas, Dr. Diane Papke (Dr. David Cole) of Eldridge, Iowa, and Dean (Mary K.) Papke of Miles, Iowa, 9 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren; his sister: Fern Dosland of Clinton; two sister-in-laws: Rosalyn Mommsen and Alberta Mommsen of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and both spouses, he was preceded in death by his 8 siblings.

Memorials can be made to Camp Courageous or Faith Lutheran Church.
