Gary Joseph Humphrey, 67, of Mediapolis, Iowa and formerly of Clinton passed away at Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa on December 26, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, at Lemke Funeral Homes - South Chapel (2610 manufacturing drive - just west of Clinton Lawn Cemetery). A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Saint Boniface Cemetery, Clinton. Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gary was born March 13, 1947 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Clarence and Ella (Bartels) Humphrey. Gary attended St. Mary's High School. He was a past member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clinton.
Gary achieved the highest ranking in the Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout at age 14.
Although Gary was stricken with a mental illness as a teenager, he always maintained a caring and loving attitude towards everyone. Gary enjoyed building model airplanes and dreamed of becoming a pilot. He loved music, especially the Beatles and also enjoyed art and painting pictures. In High School Gary was considered a track star, and would later carry on that love of track and field competition as he participated in the Special Olympics achieving a Gold Medal. At his home in Mediapolis he loved playing bingo and socializing with his friends.
Gary is survived by one sister - Sherry (Tim) Wildasin of Muscatine, IA; one niece and three nephews.
Preceding Gary in death were his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Memorials made should be directed to the Special Olympics and mailed to Muscatine Community Y Attn: Special Olympics, 1823 Logan St. Muscatine, IA 52761 in Gary's name.
