Michael C. “Herky” Powers age 76 of Clinton passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends and family attending are encouraged to wear your black and gold. In following Mike’s wishes, cremation rites will follow. In leu of flowers a memorial has been established.
Mike was born in East Rochester, NY on November 30, 1937, the son of Richard E. and Blanche (Cardinal) Powers. He married Rita Daniels on January 21, 1961 in Fulton. He had been a member of the U.S. Marine Reserves. Mike had been employed with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and later, as a carrier for the United States Postal Service in Clinton for over 30 years.
Mike has been a member of the University of Iowa I Club for over 40 years, and the Clinton I Club. He is also a member of the Eagle Club, Loyal Order of Moose, Amvets and Past President and member of the Clinton Lions Club and the Clinton Mustang Club. He loved to socialize, tell jokes and was known for handing out candy. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan who enjoyed county western dancing, Lumber King games and his love for animals.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rita; two brothers, Richard C. (Phyllis) Powers of South Fulton, TN and Patrick (Kathy) Powers of Madison, WI; a sister, Ariana (Larry) Betenbender of Iowa City; three nephews, one niece; a great nephew; a cousin, Roderick Powers of Auburn, AL; five brothers-in-law, Wayne (Shirley) Daniels, Harlan (Joann) Daniels, Darrell Daniels, Lary Daniels and Stanley (Judi) Daniels and his devoted dog “Tippy II” and cat “Emma”. He was preceded in death by his parents and his faithful and loyal companion “Tippy I”. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
