JOHN QUIGLEY DEAD

After a lingering illness with pneumonia, John Quigley died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Thomas Purcell, in Clinton, last Sunday morning.

Mr. Quigley was born in Ireland in 1831 and with his parents came to America, when about five years of age. They resided in New York for a while and then moved to Canada. After residing there for a few years they returned to New York and then in 1853 came to Iowa locating in this township. Shortly after coming here, Mr. Quigley, in company with his two brothers, embarked in the grocery business, in which they continued for many years. Upon the death of his brothers Mr. Quigley closed out the business and since has lived a life of leisure.

Mr. Quigley was one of the best posted men in this part of the county. He could converse fluently on nearly every topic of the day and his memory of events transpiring both in the old and new was remarkable. Given any event occurring in any country, he could recall the date and give the ruling monarch at the time. He will be greatly missed by his old associates.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Purcell of Clinton and Mrs. John O'Farrell of Petersville. Mr. Quigley was well known to the people of this vicinity, being a frequent visitor in Charlotte and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. The funeral was held at the church of Immaculate Conception, Petersville, Tuesday morning, with solemn requiem high mass by Rev. Father Lentz, assisted by Rev. Father Hartigan as deacon and Rev. Father O'Dowd, sub-deacon. After the celebration of the mass Rev. Father Lentz preached an able sermon, paying a glowing tribute to the memory of Mr. Quigley. The remains were interred in the Petersville cemetery.
